FUTURE OF GOVERNANCE

The roundtable dialogue last February 28 at the Pimentel Center for Leadership and Governance, were Prof. Nene Pimentel Jr., former President of the Senate who welcomed the distinguished guests who have held significant government positions. The discussants were Toshiko Tanaka, Country Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), former University of the Philippines President Jose Abueva, former Interior and Local Governments Secretary Rafael Alunan III, University of the Philippines Professor and newspaper columnist Randy David, Former Civil Service Chair Corazon De Leon, Civil Service Commissioner May Fernandez. The discussion was fasscilitated by PILG senior fellow Dr. Alex Brillantes, Jr..

The Roundtable discussion on the concerns of Overseas Filipino Workers in Australia, the Middle East, and the US held at the Pimentel center last February 28. The speakers are Jun Aguilar, Victor Barrios and Sen. Koko Pimentel express their views on how to improve the lives of Filipinos Working Abroad.

GRAD STUDENTS FROM PAMPANGA AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE BRIEFED ON GOOD GOVERNANCE

Prof. Nene Pimentel Jr., Chair of the Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance (PILG) conducted a briefing on Good Governance and Effective Leadership for National Transformation to graduates students of Pampanga Agricultural College at the University of Makati last February 27, 2013. Pimentel said that in order to transform our nation for the better, we need good citizens and good leaders.

KINGDOM OF BHUTAN VISITED THE PILG

The delegation from the Kingdom of Bhutan visited the Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance last February 13 to exchange views on decentralization of government powers to local governments. Heading the Bhutan delegation was Karma Weezer, a leader of a district in Bhutan which they named Dzongdag, meaning chief, of Samtse Dzongkhag.

KOREANS VISIT PILG

The visiting South Korean professors were Prof. Soon Eun Kim, Prof. Huck-ju Kwon and Ms. Eunju Kim from the Seoul National University in South Korea participated in a roundtable discussion on “Decentralization and Local Governance” with the officers and fellows of the Pimentel Center for Local Governance, the college of governance and Public Policy of the University Makati and the Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance (PILG) last January 21. The dialogue centered in exchanges of experience between the Philippines and South Korea on the area of expanding local governance in their respective countries.

TAIWAN MINISTER IS YEAREND GUEST OF PILG ROUNDTABLE TALKS

A top official and advisor of the government of Taiwan was the yearend guest and visitor of the roundtable discussion at the Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance at the University of Makati last December 21. Minister Chung is a Professor of Public Administration, National Chengchi University (Taiwan).

PILG HOST DIALOGUE WITH LAO DELEGATES

The Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance led by its Chairman Prof. Aquilino Q. Pimentel Jr., hosted a dialogue last November 27, at the Center with a delegation of officials from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in connection with the latter’s desire to know more about decentralization efforts of our government, local governance and land use planning.

Aside from the candid talk on our country’s national security concerns by DND Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, “solid discussions on good local governance” by erstwhile Dean Alex Brillantes of the UP NCPAG, PUP Prof. Terry Domugho, Business Media Executive Winston Marbella, Luigi Gana and Gwen Gana, the participants found the inputs of the other fellows of the Center “exhilarating”.

TRI-COUNTRY ROUNDTABLE on DISASTER MANAGEMENT

The Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance hosted last March 12 at the Center’s new conference hall at the 4th floor of the University of Makati Administration Building, a roundtable discussion on the forthcoming Rio Conference on Sustainable Development. Among those who discussed the issue were from Kenyan Ambassador to the United Nations, George Owuor, Professor Aquilino Q. Pimentel, Jr., Former Senator Heherson Alvarez moderator of the forum, and Dr. Viktor Sebek, Executive Director of the Inter-America Center for Peace and Security.

THAI MPS, NGOS HEAR PHILIPPINE EXPERIENCE RE DEATH PENALTY ABOLITION

Prof. Nene Pimentel of the Pimentel Center of Local Governance discussed in Bangkok the successful struggle of the Philippines to abolish the death penalty. The Professor spoke before Members of Parliament, officials of the Ministry of Justice, the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand, local journalists, the Union of Civil Liberties and Human Rights groups in the capital of Thailand last March 7, 8 and 9.

MORO LEADERS CRITIQUE GOVERNMENT PEACE PROCESS

Three leaders from the major tribal groups of the Muslims of Mindanao critically scrutinized the peace process that the government is pushing for acceptance by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) at a forum at the University of Makati last February 4. Organized by the Pimentel Center for Local Governance and the College of Governance and Public Policy of the University in collaboration with the Mindanao State University and the East West Center Alumni Association, the forum was the first that sought out public and candid views of Moro leaders on the peace process.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The Pimentel Center for Local Governance / Pimentel Institute for Leadership and Governance and the College of Governance and Public Policy, University of Makati sponsored the 1st Round Table Forum on the topic “CONFRONTING CLIMATE CHANGE", last January 31, 2012 at the CAHS Building, University of Makati.

ESSAY WRITING AND NATIVITY-HAN (BELEN) WINNERS GET PRIZES

The Design Center for Nation Building of the University received last December 9 the first place prize of P15,000 as the best among the departmental entries to the Nativity-han contest. The second prize of P10,000 was won by the College of Technology Management. The third prize of P5,000 went to the College of Arts and Sciences and Education.

BAGUIO CITY SEMINAR OVERFLOWS

The seminar for Barangay officials of Baguio City last November 28 and 29 had an overflow crowd of over 200 participants. Organized by retired airforce Col. Albert Reyes, now Barangay Captain of Palma Orbano, City Councilor Joel Alangsab, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay, and, President Ric Pama of the University of the Cordilleras, and, endorsed by City Mayor Mauricio Dumogan, the seminar originally had a confirmed attendance of less than 100 participants.

MARANAWS FIND SEMINAR, ‘THE BEST’ AND ALIGNED WITH ‘ISLAM’

Some of the 47 participants to the Center’s LGU two-full day seminar last November 25 and 26 acclaimed it as ‘the best’ and ‘useful’ they had ever joined in while the rest who were overwhelmingly Muslims found it ‘enlightening’ and ‘aligned with the teachings of Islam’ on love of country and of one another and of the need for good governance.

SULTAN OF SULU PRESSES SABAH CLAIM

Sultan Esmail D. Kiram II, the reigning 34th Sultan of Sulu and North Borneo has made an impassioned appeal for support to press the claim of Sabah (also called North Borneo) as under the sovereign title of the Sultanate of Sulu, and not as part of the territory of neighboring Malaysia.
